STERILIZATION BY FILTRATION NOTES DMLT/DDT/DOTAT-2ND YEAR MICROBIOLOGY
DMLT/DDT/DOTAT-2ND YEAR MICROBIOLOGY
STERILIZATION BY FILTRATION:
The process of filtration is unique among sterilization techniques in that it removes, rather than destroys, microorganisms.
It is a “cold” method of sterilization that removes microbes instead of killing them.
Filtration uses membranous filters that have tiny pores that let the liquid pass through but prevent bigger particles such as bacteria from passing through the filter.
This method of sterilization is useful for substances which get damaged by heat process.
E.g. sera, sugars, antibiotics solution etc.
Uses:
➤ To sterilize sera, sugars and antibiotics solution.
➤ Separation of toxins and bacteriophages from bacteria.
➤ To obtain bacteria free filtration from clinical samples for virus isolation.
➤ Sterilization of hydatid fluids.
➤ Purification of water.
There are various types of filters:
1) Candle filters: e.g.: Berke fields chamber land of filter.
2) Asbestos disk filter: e.g.: sertz filter.
3) Sintered glass filters.
4) Membrane filters
5) Air filters
6) Syringe filter.
